St. Patrick's Day Video Project
In celebration of St. Patrick's Day the Celtic Cultural Center of Texas debuts two Celtic music videos
directed by local animation artist Eric Power.

The first commissioned video is by the Prodigals called Whiskey Asylum. A wonderfully compelling song written by Gregory Grene, the Prodigals lead singer from Co. Cavan in Ireland. The action takes place in the real and often cold world of New York City, into the
warm glow of their local pub, and finally escaping onto the "whiskey world" made vivid by Power's use of a whiskey hued
fantasy land full of longing memories of love and turning seasons.

The second video is by Austin Irish guitarist, Jeff Moore called Only A Miner. The song was written by the legendary Irish artist Andy Irvine. The song focuses on the life of a coal mining father as remembered by his grateful son. The chorus from an older mining song
has been borrowed by many, including Bob Dylan, but Irvine makes the traditional eternal with new lyrics that are both harrowing and tender. Power was inspired by scenes from the 18th century Welsh coal mining towns with their striking landscapes, venerable pit
ponies and many a prince among men.

In 1994 John Doyle brought his brilliant and innovative guitar stylings to the nascent Irish super-group Solas, which soon took the folk and Celtic music worlds by storm. In the years since going out on his own, John has recorded two solo albums, including Wayward Son, which The Irish Edition hailed as “a contender for Album of the Year;” and has become a highly sought-after accompanist and session player for the likes of Joan Baez, Eileen Ivers, Tim O’Brien, Linda Thompson, Seamus Egan, Alison Brown and Kate Rusby; and has developed compelling duo performances, first with fiddler Liz Carroll and more recently with Solas’ co-founding vocalist Karan Casey.
From a musical family in Dublin, John was sixteen when he went on the road with Chanting House, a group which he formed with Susan McKeown and which eventually included such great players as Seamus Egan, Eileen Ivers, Donogh Hennessy, and Brian Doyle. The highly influential Solas followed, its success due in no small part to John’s powerful rhythmic guitar. As a member of Solas, John performed internationally to sold out audiences and appeared on many television and radio programs, including NBC’s The Today Show, A Prairie Home Companion. As part of that critically acclaimed group, he also received three NAIRD awards and a Grammy nomination.
